Rohypnol
What is it?
Rohypnol is a sleeping pill and a very potent tranquilizer similar to Valium, but much stronger. The drug produces an effect similar to a sedative. Users feel muscle relaxation and the slowing of all major responses.
Rohypnol is often called Roofies, Roche, R-2 or Rope. It is marketed by Roche Pharmaceuticals. Usually Rohypnol is sold on the street and is an inexpensive high at between $2.00 and $4.00 a pill.
Abuse of the drug began in the late 70’s in Europe and the drug made it’s way to the United States in the early 90’s.
Rohypnol
Concern has risen in the last few year over Rohypnol because it is also known as the “date rape” drug. Reports have been received where people were unknowingly given the drug, mixed with alcohol which would create unconsciousness in the person. This would make it impossible to fight off sexual assault.
The effects of Rohypnol include:
• Memory Loss
• Black Outs
• Nausea
• Dizziness
• Vomiting
• Low blood pressure
• Extreme tiredness
• Relaxed muscles
• Vision problems
• Disorientation
These effects began about 30 minutes after taking Rohypnol and last between 2 to 8 hours.
In addition Rohypnol can be deadly when mixing the drug with alcohol.
Rohypnol is not approved for use. Importing the drug is also illegal.
And, because this drug is sold on the streets, other drugs will be used in creating Rohypnol tablets including heroin and other opiate drugs. This can increase the number of Rohypnol overdoses and deaths.
GHB (Gamma-Hydroxybutyerate)
What is it?
GHB or gamma- hydroxybutyrate is a drug that is used as a sleeping aid, as well as one used as an anabolic to enhance muscle and burn fat. GHB is also a psychedelic drug.
GHB has been abused in the United States starting in the 1990’s and the drug has also been associated with sexual assaults across the country.
GHB can be sold in liquid, capsule or powder form.

GHB is usually is tasteless, but may be recognized by a salty taste.
The drug at one time was sold in health food stores and was created in France in 1960. In Europe the drug has been used as a general anesthetic and by some as a treatment for alcoholism and alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
Over the past few years GHB has been used in nightclubs for effects similar to those of Rohypnol.
Some side effects of GHB include:

• Abrupt, intense drowsiness
• Diarrhea
• Decreased body temperature
• Slower, deep respiration

• Giddiness, silliness and dizziness
• Temporary amnesia
• Interference with mobility and verbal coherence
• Semi-consciousness
• Seizures
• Decreased in heart rate
• Coma
• Death
GHB is a primary date rape drug as reports have been received that rapists will slip the drug into victim’s drinks. This is usually done at a club or a place where one is drinking alcohol. Within a half hour after being give the drug, the victim will appear drunk and helpless. The “rapist” will offer to escort the victim home which is when the assault occurs. When the victim regains consciousness, he or she has no memory of the events.

When in individual is using drugs or drinking alcohol the risk of sexual assault can increase. Drugs and alcohol can inhibit an individual’s judgment and also can cause a person to become more aggressive and no think of the consequences of their actions.
According to a study published in the Journal of Sex Education and Therapy reported that of those students who had been victims of some type of sexual aggression while in college–from rape to intimidation to illegal restraint–68 percent of their male assailants had been drinking at the time of the attack.
