Recovery Month
CANADIAN, OK - Recovery Month is
an annual observance, which began in 1989, and takes place
during the month of September. The movement is sponsored by
the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
Administration's (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse
Treatment (CSAT). The Recovery Month observance highlights
the societal benefits of substance abuse treatment, lauds the
contributions of treatment providers and promotes the message
that recovery from substance abuse in all its forms is
possible. The observance also encourages citizens to take
action to help expand and improve the availability of
effective substance abuse treatment for those in need. Each
year a new theme, or emphasis is selected for the
observance.
Recovery Month seeks to involve
multiple participants from every sector, as substance abuse
and treatment is an issue that affects everyone. The movement
provides a platform to celebrate people in recovery and those
who serve them. Each September, thousands of treatment
programs around the country celebrate their successes and
share them with their neighbors, friends, and colleagues in
an effort to educate the public about treatment, how it
works, for whom, and why. Substance abuse treatment providers
have made significant accomplishments, having transformed the
lives of untold thousands of Americans.
One such celebration is occurring
at one of the nation's largest residential drug and alcohol
rehabilitation centers, Narconon Arrowhead. Centrally located
in southeast Oklahoma, the incredibly successful treatment
program attracts hundreds of clients from around the country
each year that seek non-traditional, drug-free
rehabilitation.
On September 21st, 2002, Narconon
Arrowhead is holding an event to celebrate the successes of
the program and to unite the efforts of the program graduates
from all corners of the country. More than one hundred
graduates that have successfully overcome addiction are
expected in attendance to strengthen the support group and
increase treatment advocacy in their communities. Included in
the group are graduates that completed the Narconon(r)
Program from 1966 to 1978 and are still living prosperous
drug-free lives, many of them choosing to work in the
substance abuse treatment and prevention field themselves.
Also in attendance for the event will be families of staff
and graduates, local supporters and several State
Legislators. The total number of participants at the event is
expected to be around 750 people and it starts at 7:30 PM at
the facility.
The Narconon(r) Program
demonstrates the workability of L. Ron Hubbard's drug-free
social education methodology and achieves an incredibly high
success rate for ending addiction and returning people to
happy, ethical and productive lives.
